1. Dries Van Noten
Every season seems to have one collection that is a clear-cut standout amongst the rest. Last season, it was Phoebe Philo’s triumphant return at Celine that cast shadows over the rest of the shows. This time around, it’s Dries Van Noten who has taken a big step ahead of her as the dead knockout of Fall 2010. A runway show the length of his, both in the number of looks and the physical length of the catwalk, I usually find tedious and nearly unbearable (*ahem* Chanel *ahem*) but Dries billed up to such quantity with inordinate and exceptional quality. This collection struck a near-perfect balance between his own raison d’etre of mix-and-match colors and prints, and an unusually prevalent leopard print trend and the vintage silhouettes that are resurgent in the season. The clothing and the styling of the models seemed exceptionally real - there was a sense that these were girls walking down the street in an impossibly chic day-to-day life. Not one look of the 54 seemed ‘off’ or gratuitous - each contributed to the collective image of the smart and well-dressed DVN woman (particularly those looks featuring his divine take on the slouchy oversized sweater, a personal favorite). As Ms. Philo’s spring 2010 collection at Celine, expect this one from Dries to pop up in different iterations in other designer’s collections in the season to come. It will be understandable, too - who wouldn’t want a piece of the bright, graceful elegance of this collection?
